About Target 80

Target 80 is a Community  Interest  Company seeking to achieve 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 across the Chew Valley and the surrounding villages. We currently have 11 villages represented on a steering group who are working towards the strategic reduction of carbon emissions by developing a Community Climate Chage Strategy.

Over the last few years environmental issues have been debated across the Chew Valley and a number of people have been drawn towards Go Zero or the Transition movement. Both organisations evolved in 2004 out of concerns about climate change and peak oil and were responsible for bringing ahigher awareness about environemntal issues. At that time it was easy to ignor the science or dismiss it as scare mongering. Since then we have had increased global temperature, very unusual
and extreme weather patterns.

Legislation is now in place both nationally and at local level for authorities to reduce their impact on the planet. They are now bound by law to ensure that per capita carbon emissions are reduced. North Somerset Council are in the early stages of developing their carbon reduction action plans. Bath & North East Somerset are slightly further ahead and are soon to announce their strategies for reduction.

In the meantime the residents of the Chew Valley and surrounding villages have decided that rather than wait to be told what may or may not be required, they would like to lead the way in deciding how local people can take local action. This will involve:

  • identifying the causes of carbon emissions within our communities

  • devising and action plan for reducing carbon emissions

  • identifying local natural resouces that may be harnessed to produce energy

  • looking other factors that produce carbon emissions like food miles and
unnecessary travel and helping people to reduce their reliance on these

We hope to have a draft document by early Autum of this year that will be made available for comment and discussion. This is an exciting project where local people can contribute to their own destiny and secure a sustainable future for the next generations. Target 80 will be working alongside local councils to ensure that residents across our region have a voice in how we collectively reduce carbon emissions. At the same time we all invest in the natural resources that we do have that are as yet, untapped.
